planted on my little patch of sidewalk,
nodding to my neighbor a few feet away
we’ve never really met but we’re in it together
standing around and stomping our feet,
doing nothing
more alert than either of us have ever been
watching the streets around us,
for anything remotely out of place
wishing I was just a little more brave,
able to do more for my community
